Understanding Colorants
Definition
A colorant is any substance that imparts color to another material or mixture. It can be used to color inks, paints, plastics, textiles, cosmetics, food, and other products. Colorants work by absorbing certain wavelengths of light and reflecting others, which our eyes perceive as color.
Types of Colorants
Colorants are broadly categorized into two main types:
- Dyes – Soluble substances that penetrate materials and bond chemically, typically used for textiles, inks, and food.
- Pigments – Insoluble particles that remain suspended in a medium and provide color through surface coating, often used in paints and plastics.
Additional forms include lakes (insoluble dye-pigment combinations), toners, and color concentrates used in industrial applications.
